~~~IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO LISTEN USING HEADPHONES IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. THIS IS A STEREO RECORDING AND WILL LOSE SIGNIFICANT IMPACT IF PLAYED THROUGH LAPTOP OR PHONE SPEAKERS~~~
About this song:
This was the very first song recorded on Tanner's first album, recorded around 8/5/2016. The song gets its name from the observation of Stephen Hawking in interviews saying that aliens would want to destroy us if they visit our planet. I disagree, as he is basing his idea of alien intelligence off of human intelligence. He references to the multiple genocides throughout human history when meeting new groups of people, ie. Christopher Columbus and the Native Americans. I disagree with this standing though, as I believe our "habit" of treating new groups this way lies in 1. our immaturity as a species and (more importantly) 2. our development of intelligence as a whole. Our intelligence is mostly based off of social development. We think in verbal languages that we use to communicate with others of our race, it affects how we mate, furthering the social tie to our intelligence as evolution takes progress. I think aliens would obviously have some way of communicating with each other, that would be essential to achieving interstellar travel, but I don't believe it necessarily had to develop first like it did for us. For example, the octopus is an incredibly intelligent species, and I would consider the cephalopod to be more advanced by most common metrics humans would use to measure intelligence than a significant number of other species on Earth. That being said, their intelligence is rooted in an ability to problem-solve that is linked to their environment. Octopi live in areas like the Great Barrier Reef, one of the most biologically diverse areas on the planet, that require some kind of "trick" in order to stay alive. For the octopus it's largely their intelligence and versatility of body compostion that allows them to survive in this environment. I believe it to be completely possible for a species that is rooted in this kind of environment could birth a higher intelligence equal to or greater than human intelligence given the right circumstances. I further argue that we would have no way of predicting how a species like this would react to new species they (in our case) sought out to find, as their logic would be inherently different than ours. So I find it unnecessarily pessimistic to think that an alien race would want to eliminate us if they found us out here in the empty space around the Sun.
lyrics
Lyrics:
I don't feel alone, I'm groaning just because I wanna.
Try to hold me close, I'm pushing back but I don't wanna.
I'm trying hard to see the brighter me that you have worshiped, but now we've come to close.
I don't think about you that much anyways.
Say you don't understand me, well thats' okay cuz I don't either.
Said you couldn't stand me, well I won't repeat myself.
Was I just too scared? You don't need to care.
You said it's all you know, the groaning and the masochism.
But I never seem to know when to talk and when to listen.
Please just set me free, I'm all alone until my deathbed.
But when my eyes are closed I don't think about it that much anyways.
The thoughts will try and haunt me (could we please just change the subject?)
Well I don't need to lay here! (my eyes are shut wide open)
Was i just too scared? You don't need to care.
